Early morning as we left Denham looking over to Shell beach where we stopped on the way up to Denham
We left Denhan today at 7.45am after a good three night stay. Thoroughly enjoyed the area and especially the clear blue skies. After a full morning of driving, arriving into Carnarvon about 12.30pm. They have an island off the coast joined to mainland by a causeway called Babbage Island. We stopped out there and made lunch before we went back to town to go to the supermarket to stock up. The next four days we are staying at are popular areas this time of year. So everything will be more expensive to buy. Fridge is now full. Lucky we got one of the big three way fridges. They are great as in these newer vans they automatically switch over to power when we are plug in like in a camp site, battery when we are on the move, gas if not connected to power and not moving like if you are free camping or don’t have a power connection. We don’t usually do this, but might in at least a couple of places we will be passing through. When we have used these fridges before we manually had to switch them over for each different situation. Not much happening today mainly driving doing about 329kms. Not hard driving as the roads are usually so straight going forever. Just one night here just a sleep break then off to Coral Bay tomorrow for two nights.
After we left Denham we went to see the red bluff lookout which we missed on the way up due to maintenance. This is the first dirt road we have been down which is only 4 kms. They are not always this good but can see the grader has been down it lately.
Out at Red Bluff lookout could of been about 25km out of Denham back down the peninsula. It was really too early in the morning as the sun hadn’t come up far enough to shine on the cliffs. There’s that man again, he keeps following me.
Close up of the cliff face above.
The boardwalk continued further along to look out over the little island below. What a perfect day.
You can see when I talk about straight roads that go forever. They are like this right up the coast once you leave the towns. But this shot wasn’t on the main highway this was coming down from Denham still on the peninsular. One section of road we travelled 50kms in a straight line although I must admit that there was one small deviation of not more than one degree.
Arrived in Carnarvon and went out to Babbage Island over a causeway and pulled up at this area to see what they call the Mile Long Jetty. We thought it maybe about 300m. long and thought we would walk out on it as it went to the waters edge looking out over the bay. But another maintenance job, closed keep out too dangerous. So we stopped there and made some lunch.
In the same street they had these museum pieces below just sitting on the side of the road. I guess they would be too big for anyone to steal them!!!!
An old train
In the background was the old lighthouse. I took a few more photos but didn’t want to over do them in the blog.
There are warnings around saying to be cautious of all the sand that blows in with the strong winds.
This proves a point they must have to clear the roads often. We are still on the island so it would probably help to protect Carnarvon but the island would be very exposed to the strong westerly winds coming in off the Indian Ocean.
Still on the Island looking back over the water towards the town of Carnarvon.
Left the island now back in town going around the waterfront looking for the supermarket. A very pretty area with a long waterfront walk around the harbour .
Continuation of the harbour walk
And guess what we had for dinner tonight?
