Kununurra - 4th June , 2022

Our second day at Kununurra to explore the Mirima National Park. We got away at 8.00am to walk through the back gates of the caravan park which we thought was a quick way to enter the park. But how wrong it was about a 2.5kms walk to get to the spot we would start our walks. Although the walk was spectacular walking along the track admiring the huge towering sandstone rocks. Even though it was early in the day it was so hot with sun and being 35degrees. The sandstone  rocks form a valley which we walk through hence no wind down there. We finally arrived at our first walking trail which would take us on a track winding through the rocks to a gap between the eroded sandstone range which looked out over the town. This trail was called Dempboong Banan Trail. Dempboong meaning Gap and Banan meaning trail. The language of the Aboriginal people.  We then went to the next trail which took us scrambling over rocks and climbing up many stairs which had been purpose build to help make it easier. At the top we looked down over our camping ground and couldn’t believe it was just down there after we had had such a long walk around a big loop to get to the Park. The sun was getting hotter and making it very exhausting. Not used to this sort of heat. And the worst part was that we had to turn around and go back all the way to where we started. Arrived back at camp at about 10.30am. Then did all the washing, hung it out had lunch then went to town to see some other sites, do the shopping arriving back to camp ready for a cold drink or two. A Big day.

This is a circular arena, formed naturally.

And this is the entrance into the small arena.

This is the entrance to the first trail Dempboong Banan Trail.

Look at the size of PT so small against these towering rocks.

Walking through the winding track along the trail.

A small caved in part of the rock face.

The path continuing on. Very pretty.

Arriving at the gap in the eroded sandstone range to look out over the town.

This is a bigger angle of the left side of the gap above.

I’m in there somewhere.

Back out continuing walking along the paths to the next walk.

It’s all very well done.

Starting the climb up to he top of the viewing area which will take us to the lookout down over our camp

Still climbing up.

Now half way up looking down into where we started climbing these rocks having
the rings around them like the Bungle Bungles that’s why they have been named the mini Bungles but no where near the 300m high ones we flew over.

Close up of the above.

Still climbing a look out stop, down onto the previous two photos. That railing is there is due to a deep drop down.

This is the view at the top looking down on our camp. Our van is dotted in there somewhere. Doesn’t look anywhere as high as we climbed as I zoomed down to see it better.

Down at the bottom of this climb we walking back to the entrance of the park and then made our long walk back to base. So hot ,tired and exhausted..

Back in town now went for a drive up Kelly’s Knob lookout over the town. ‘Bev this one is for you’  we could drive up this one didn’t have to walk. Phew!!🙃

Ord River Diversion Dam. Just out of town. Not much water flowing today. It was really working as we drove past it yesterday but we didn’t stop thinking we would come back today but missed out there.
