Lake Argyle - 6th and 7th June, 2022

Yesterday and today just enjoyed one of the walks each day. That was enough in this heat and very little wind. Then cooled down in the pool which brought the body temperature back down to nearer normal. It’s amazing how that swim makes you feel better for the day. Unless you go and do more walking, but one was enough. That’s about all we have done over these two days ,great just to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere. We are up on the road again tomorrow crossing over the border to the Northern Territory where our clock will go back one and a half hours.

Monday 6th June - Western Australian Day ( holiday)

This morning we took off about 8.00am to do the Ord River Gorge lookout. Just  across  the road from the camp there was a track going up over the hill and along the cliff tops to a spot looking back to the Ord River Dam and gorge. Above we were on our way up the hill looking back over to the camping ground. Over the top of the green trees in the camp it drops away down to a steep cliff to the little inlet of the lake.

This is as far as we went a 2km return walk. Still hard going climbing up over the hill. Just a very rough stoney track to follow. Looking down the gorge up to the dam. Lake in the background. This lake is huge and we only see very little of it here. The resort / camping Park has been running boat cruises on Lake Argyle since the dam was first filled in 1973. The lake has more than 70 islands created by the Dam. The surface area of the Lake is 703sq km so that will give an idea how much we just don’t see.

Closer look

Freaking out PT as I look over the shear drop very high gorge wall. (A real showman. PT)

This is what I was looking down too, a long way down into the gorge.

Now looking the other way as the river continues on.

Looking closer in over the hills to the lake far away. That’s the Dam wall bottom left corner all made of stone, not concrete.

At the top of the lookout and now on our way down to the camp. This is what we climbed up. Small and large pieces of rock with very little growth.

Had to take a photo of this nearly dead tree which is trying so hard to produce one brightly coloured flower. With background of the gorge wall. As soon as we got back to base, straight into the pool. Magic.

Later in the afternoon I went round just to take photos of the resort grounds. Such a beautiful place. This helicopter was the same company that ran the flights at the Bungle Bungles. But this one they take the doors off so it is all open. I wish they did that for us as taking the photos through the glass caused a few reflections. Probably just as well as PT would have freaked out. He would have been beside himself. Don’t tell him I said that.🤫.  (Yeah, yeah)

Gardens around the Lodge area looking over the lake.

Now back in the camping area no views of the lake but very nice with lots of shady trees.

Coming back after our walk and there’s that man again!

This is our set up. Very pleasant for three nights stay.

PT cooking dinner outside. Gets dark very quickly and early.

At 4.30pm they have a singer entertaining on the lawn just in front of the swimming pool. For about an hour. The sun was just starting to go down putting a nice glow on the mountains. We also had to go and fuss over the beautiful boxer in the foreground. Just looked like Dempsey and very quiet nature. But he was a boy. He looked so young no grey hairs and was 10 years old,  older than Cassie lived to.

Tuesday 7th June,

Another walk after breakfast down from the camp, down a steep track to water level. Looking up to the end of the inlet just down in front of the property. Hard going down but gosh very hard coming back up again in the heat.

Heading for the pontoon to sit down, take our shoes off and put our feet in the water.

Just sat here for quite awhile just watching little Canoes going by and the kids swimming.

Just sitting there looking the other way back out to the lake.

Very steep cliffs across the water. Still in the dark as the sun hadn’t come up enough.

This one got out of order, walking down to the waters edge through just as rough track as yesterday.

Still sitting on the pontoon. So quiet and peaceful. It sure has been a very enjoyable break from driving.

On our way back to the top, nearly there. Exhausting climbing in the heat, so straight back into the pool. Probably in there for about an hour as got talking to some very nice Melbourne people. This is what is down below the camp. Going to have a night at Timber Creek tomorrow night, just a sleep over, half way between here and Katherine. Two nights in Katherine.
